Elon Musk said Tesla and SpaceX intend to build and operate their planned Terafab AI chip complex themselves, pushing back on speculation that TSMC could take control of the project. Musk said TSMC could potentially sublease part of the facility, but he emphasized that his companies would remain in charge.

What Terafab is supposed to do

Terafab is a planned Texas manufacturing complex intended to produce large volumes of chips for artificial-intelligence workloads. The project is tied to Musk’s companies, which are consuming increasing amounts of computing power for autonomous driving, robotics, spacecraft systems and AI development.

Bringing more manufacturing under direct control could reduce dependence on outside suppliers, but building a modern semiconductor fabrication facility is among the most difficult and capital-intensive industrial projects in the world.

TSMC could still have a role

Musk said TSMC might sublease part of the project. TSMC is the world’s leading contract chipmaker and already manufactures advanced processors for many major technology companies.

Any involvement by TSMC would be significant because the company brings manufacturing expertise that is difficult to replicate. However, Musk’s comments suggest he does not want the project to become a conventional outsourced foundry arrangement.

Intel remains part of the discussion

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the U.S. chipmaker is still involved with Terafab. That creates an unusual competitive dynamic because Intel and TSMC are both potential manufacturing partners while also competing in advanced chip production.

For Intel, participation in a major AI manufacturing project could strengthen its foundry ambitions. For Tesla and SpaceX, working with multiple partners may reduce technology and supply-chain risk.

Why Musk wants more control over chips

Tesla’s autonomous-driving systems and future robotics plans depend heavily on specialized AI processors. SpaceX also operates large computing and communications systems. Owning more of the chip-development and production process could give Musk’s companies greater control over cost, supply and design.

But vertical integration can also increase execution risk. Semiconductor fabs require years of process development, massive clean-room infrastructure and constant investment to remain competitive.

Why the project matters to U.S. chip policy

The United States has been trying to rebuild domestic semiconductor manufacturing after decades of production shifting toward Asia. A successful Texas fab would fit that broader industrial goal, although commercial viability will depend on yields, technology and customers.

What to watch next

Investors will look for a confirmed construction schedule, capital budget, manufacturing technology and clearer roles for Intel and TSMC. The biggest question is whether Terafab becomes a real production platform or remains an ambitious long-term proposal.
