World Bank Raises Africa 2026 Growth Forecast to 4.3% and Calls for More AI Investment
The World Bank has lifted its 2026 growth forecast for Africa to 4.3% and says investment in AI and digital infrastructure could help lift productivity.
The World Bank has raised its 2026 economic growth forecast for Africa to 4.3%, pointing to stronger-than-expected performance across much of the region despite energy shocks and global uncertainty.
The lender had previously expected growth of 4.1%. The upgrade is significant because many African economies have been dealing with higher financing costs, volatile commodity prices, currency pressure and disruptions linked to global conflicts.
A more resilient outlook
The World Bank said a broad group of regional economies is performing better than earlier forecasts suggested. That does not mean the outlook is risk-free: debt burdens remain high in some countries, food and energy costs remain politically sensitive and climate shocks can quickly alter agricultural output.
Still, faster growth gives governments more room to focus on longer-term productivity instead of only short-term crisis management.
Why the World Bank is emphasizing AI
The lender is encouraging governments to invest in artificial intelligence and related digital infrastructure. The argument is that AI could help improve productivity in areas such as agriculture, financial services, logistics, healthcare, education and public administration.
But the benefits will depend on reliable electricity, broadband access, affordable computing, skilled workers and rules that build trust. Without those foundations, AI investment may remain concentrated in a small number of cities and companies.
Jobs are the central challenge
Africa has one of the world’s youngest populations, which creates both an opportunity and a policy challenge. Economic growth must translate into large numbers of productive jobs. Digital technologies can help new businesses scale, but governments also need investment in manufacturing, infrastructure and education.
What to watch next
Investors will watch whether the upgraded forecast is sustained as oil prices, global interest rates and trade conditions change. Another key measure will be whether technology spending produces broad productivity gains rather than only isolated AI projects.
